چکیده

A fundamental obstacle in evolutionary simulations is the necessity of designing more complex simulations to elicit more complex behaviors. We use a combat-based fitness measure to attempt to circumvent this problem. We have designed a simulation that simultaneously evolves the brains and bodies of creatures for one-on-one combat in a threedimensional environment with realistic physics. By giving the creatures a rich sensorium, we allow them to react sensibly to each others' actions. We discuss the effective, elegant and diverse simulated fighters that emerge, and examine whether qualitatively greater evolutionary complexity arises.

In Silicon No One Can Hear You Scream: Evolving Fighting Creatures

Virtual creatures operating in a physically realistic 3D environment, as originally introduced by Karl Sims, provide a challenging domain for artificial evolution. However, few coevolutionary experiments have been reported. Here we describe the results of our experiments on the evolution of physical combat among virtual creatures: essentially, we evolve creatures that trade blows with each othe...

Evolving Physically Simulated Flying Creatures for Efficient Cruising

The body-brain coevolution of aerial life forms has not been developed as far as aquatic or terrestrial locomotion in the field of artificial life. We are studying physically simulated 3D flying creatures by evolving both wing shapes and their controllers. A creature's wing is modeled as a number of articulated cylinders, connected by triangular films (patagia). The wing structure and its motor...

Sticky Feet - Evolution in a Multi-Creature Physical Simulation

We demonstrate artificial evolution in a system that combines physical simulation with competition between creatures. The simulated creatures are constructed using point masses that are connected by oscillating springs. The creatures pull themselves across their 2D environment by varying the amount of friction at different point masses, giving them sticky feet. Creatures combat one another, and...

Evolving Adaptation in Virtual Creatures

The Problem: The simulated evolution of virtual creatures has produced many intriguing demonstrations, providing simple locomotion abilities and strategies for simple competetive games. However, to achieve a richer set of behaviours, adaptation within the individual’s lifetime is being explored. Can evolution be used to learn domain specific rules for solving the credit assignment problem and s...

Evolving 3 D Morphology and Behavior by Competition Karl Sims Thinking Machines Corporation 245

This paper describes a system for the evolution and co-evolution of virtual creatures that compete in physically simulated three-dimensional worlds. Pairs of individuals enter one-on-one contests in which they contend to gain control of a common resource. The winners receive higher relative fitness scores allowing them to survive and reproduce. Realistic dynamics simulation including gravity, c...
